In the West, many businessmen take a great interest in collecting wines.
Recently, Russia has seen the emergence of interest in it, too. How long
wines are kept, in what conditions, whether it's a paying proposition
- these topics arouse intense interest among Russian wine collectors.
Wine collecting is primarily a passion, as well as any collection per
se. Possession of wine collection produces a certain image of its owner,
evidences his or her respectability and perfect taste. People making such
investments can also get considerable financial return. Return for investing
in collections of antique arms, as well as in antique items or paintings,
is based on investment objects' increase in value in the course of time
plus the "image" component of the price.

Wine Collections: Investment Peculiarities
Wine
collection can comprise one bottle, several bottles or a whole wine cellar.
It depends on the collector's means. Although wines of the same brand are, generally,
bought in cases (containing six 0,75-l bottles). A 1,5-l bottle (the so-called
magnum) where only high-quality wine of the best years of bottling is kept is
especially popular among collectors of elite wines.
It is clear that not any wine, even if it is French wine, is worth being included
in the collection. Above all, it should necessarily be vintage wine (i.e. high-quality
wine aged in casks, made of specific grape varieties growing in certain wine
zones according to a special technique), after ageing in a cask or a tank it
is additionally bottled for no less than 2 years. If properly maintained, red
wines can have a shelf life of up to 100 years or sometimes even more. However,
today, the main investment tool of a wine collector is red wines less than 30
years old.
Investment portfolio is formed according to specific stocks and shares
selection strategies depending on the profitability and risk ratio in
securities categories, whereas "typical" wine collections do not exist
at all. Here are the key reference points an investor can make use of:
- wine price categories;
- producers of trustworthy credit;
- expert evaluation of the quality of wine of a particular crop.
Massandra Fine Wines
Grape
gathered in Crimean vineyards is processed, depending on the brand, during
several years according to its unique technique and then bottled - this
is how vintage wine is made. The Massandra Association produces 28 vintage
wine brands. They are drastically different in flavour and colour, this
is a big advantage of Massandra wines, each of which is in a class by
itself.
Most Massandra vineyards are situated among pine forests, which renders
wine especially delicate, as ancient writers Plutarch and Theofrast claim.
Thus, bottled vintage wine stored in a reclining position in a cool, dark
place at a constant temperature of 14 degrees Celsius for no less than
5 years is a fine wine.
Here is an extract from the fine wine "handling regulations"
applied when taking it:
Wines aged in bottles for 5 years or more develop a very valuable
bottle bouquet. It is versatile and easily gone when decanting wine and
restored no earlier than in six months time. That is why old wine should
not be decanted.
Wines older than 1950s are supplemented with a hard-back wine passport.
All wines are provided with quality and conformance certificate. Bottles
have natural stoppers and are sealed with wax. Longstanding dust is preserved,
when packing up bottles. All bottles are supplied in MASSANDRA patent
box.
Massandra Collection is among the largest and the most difersified in the world.
It is common knowledge that there is a limit to everything. Wine is no exception.
It is an open secret that many of them acetify as a result of extralong ageing.
That is why wine collection is not a fine art or antiques museum. Wine is a
living organism. It is born, gains strength, grows older and dies. Experimental
data and practice show that an optimal ageing period for dessert and strong
wines is 30 to 50 years. At this age wine shows all its best virtues.
